History of the Group

Under its original name of Longwood Resident’s Association, the first meeting took place on the 25th April 1990.  Described as an ‘open house’ meeting it was called by then Golcar Councillor Cyril Pearce.

Some 20 residents attended that meeting where, following election of officers and discussion on a constitution for the group, it was agreed that members of the committee would make a village appraisal.

This appraisal would detail Longwood as it was at that date and the form it could take in the future in view of current planning applications, proposed developments and both Council and private plans for the district. Of particular concern were the level, type and flow of traffic through and around the village and the effects on this of any future developments.

The new association agreed to continue on an ad hoc basis for the first 12 months in order to ascertain both the need for the Association and its capabilities after which time the Association and Committee would be formalised.

In 1999 there was a need for a fresh impetus and a public meeting was called in the Mechanics’ Hall on the 15th September1999.  The adoption of a new name was announced; it was explained that the new name had a modern feel and was inclusive of anyone  who had the interest of the community at heart;  thus the Longwood Village Group or LVG, as it is more commonly known, came into being. The overall objectives remained the same: traffic and transport, planning and village amenities.

At around this time the group was in discussion with Kirklees Community Development Services about A scheme called ‘Planning for Real’ which involved a complete survey of Longwood to take in all aspects of community life. A constitution was now urgently needed along with obtaining charitable status in order to be able to make funding applications for the project.

A membership subscription was proposed and the very first of the monthly LVG coffee at the Mechanics’ was held on Saturday 4th December to raise funds for the Group.
